Earth Day 2023
Happy Earth Day.
Everyone knows I love the sustainability/environmental field, so I think it’s important to state how bored I am of hearing “recycle more, buy less, go green, etc.”
Yes, I said BORED (to death). Not because those things don’t have any value, not because I don’t advocate for those things, but because I care. A lot.
I care about achieving true, global sustainability, creating a lasting synergy between the environment, economy, and society. Pursuing a harmonious existence for all.
What lights me up is getting to the core of the matter. Implementing effective ideas for the wicked problems (e.g., the opposites of the UN Sustainable Development Goals) we face.
So here’s what I would like to tell you instead – a theory. I’ll call it the woho theory. I believe it gets at the root cause of, well…everything.
I think that we are all like seeds. Within us are instructions and the potential to become what we are meant to be. Except unlike seeds, we have a choice. To either follow our internal guidance and become what we desire to be, or be swayed off our path.
“We all have two lives. The second begins when we realize we only have one.”
This is where woho comes in – my acronym for we only have one. (I like to think of it as the evolved version of #yolo.)
What if everyone aligned their actions with their values, surrendered to living their dream lives, and followed the call of their hearts/souls/intuitions? What if we all “selfishly” did so?
Well, my theory is we’d achieve global sustainability.
Because it's all connected. Because I believe there is even greater truth in being the change we wish to see than we realize.
Too idealistic and far-fetched? Easy to say? A privilege for few? Not how the world works? But money?
Maybe. And maybe our beliefs create our realities.
So much more to be said, but for now, I hope you do what you feel inspired to do today (and every day for that matter). Because I believe doing so will serve the Earth and Earth Day mission infinitely more than if everyone just committed to following the three (four?) Rs.
I just do.
